Lynnewood hall is one of the biggest gilded-age mansions in the United States. Around a century ago Mister Peter AB Widener ordered the architect Horace Trumbauer to design and build the mansion. Over the course of three years, this masterpiece was built and became one of the biggest mansions in the continental United States. The construction cost was 8 million dollars, calculating inflation that would be around 260 million today. With 110 rooms, 55 bedrooms, 20 Bathrooms, 5 art galleries, and many more common rooms that serve very specific purposes, Lynnewood Hall was a dream come true for Peter, it was unlike any gilded age mansion built before its time. Later on, the Mansion fell into the hands of Peter his son Joseph, who was fascinated by everything French and let the mansion be redesigned into a French country estate. Lynnewood Hall, once the largest abandoned mansion in the United States, is now beginning a new chapter, ready to impact the lives of everyone who comes through its doors. This is a follow-up documentary to the first one we posted two years ago. Since then, the Preservation Foundation has been able to purchase the property and initiated crucial cleanup and renovation efforts in key areas of the property. We immediately planned to make a second part to document the progress and future restoration plans, delving deeper into the Preservation Foundation's growth and history. Completed in 1734, it served as the summer retreat for the Saldanha family until its acquisition in 1879 by a wealthy businessman and philanthropist: Count Henrique Burnay. After his death in 1909, the palace became the property of the state and, in the 20th century, the palace went from a summer retreat to the administrative headquarters of the Technical University of Lisbon. As the university occupied the palace, it underwent further renovations to adapt to its needs, while keeping in mind the palace's historical and architectural significance. Now, in 2024, there are talks of a future investment that aims to revive Burnay Palace. We will go more in-depth on this topic later on, including the full history of the palace and its many residents. Peck, born in 1868, was a prominent businessman known for his contributions to the arts, education, and healthcare. He supported the Providence Homeopathic Hospital of RI (now Roger Williams Medical Center) and various cultural institutions. Frederick hosted numerous social and cultural events alongside his wife Mary, an orchid enthusiast, making the mansion a vibrant community hub. Belton Court was built in two phases (1905-1906 and 1927-1928) and boasts 55,000 square feet of livable space. It functioned as a museum, featuring a library with over 8,000 rare books and a gallery of world-renowned paintings. The estate included a 20,000-square-foot stable complex, a 5,000-square-foot greenhouse, and flower beds. Frederick employed a full-time staff of about fifteen people. The mansion is a masterwork with a ballroom, reception hall, and smoking room. It housed unique tapestries, priceless artworks, and rare books. Notable guests included Charles Curtis and Corinne Roosevelt Robinson, with rumors of President Calvin Coolidge's stay in the 1920s. Frederick Peck passed away in 1947, and the mansion's contents were auctioned off. The home was donated to the Providence Homeopathic Hospital of RI, but deemed unusable, it was sold to developers. Despite its historical significance, the mansion faces demolition. Belton Court's legacy, managed by Barrington College and later Zion Bible Institute, has suffered neglect over the years. Belton Court was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976 and awaits an uncertain future. Its last owner vacated the property in 2011, and now this monumental piece of history is at risk. Hidden away in a small town in northern Portugal, you will find the Sanatorium Presidente Carmona, better known as the Paredes de Coura Sanatorium. It started as a sanatorium to help railway employees affected by tuberculosis in the early 1900s, and then later converted into a psychiatric hospital after the Revolution of April 25th. Little is known about what happened in the following years, but it was permanently shut down shortly after and has been left in that state to this day.
